To whoever wrote the comments regarding not having positive feelings for Capernwray anymore; please hear me on a couple of things. First, Im sorry that you don't agree with these people's style of teaching and that these people were rude to you but PLEASE remember: is that not why Christ came in the first place?! Not everyone agrees with one another, and nobody is perfect! Im by no means trying to send you another nasty email, I just want you to remember to forgive these people just as you and I are forgiven because of Christ. Their actions are not neccessarily a reflection on the school they went to - just the sinful nature we are all born with... |

While I realize Christians are not perfect, I agree with the late Keith Green that it has been overemphasized as an excuse for not pressing on to perfection. I quote from Keith Green's "What's Wrong With the Gospel? - Section 2: "The Added Parts"", which you can find at http://www.lastdaysministries.org/articles/whatswrongwiththegospel2.html: "Bumper Stickers, Cheap Clichés, and "Christian" Slogans. It pains me to see the beautiful truths of Scripture being plastered about like beer advertisements. Many think it is wise to "get the word out" in this way but, believe that we are really just inoculating the world with bits and pieces of truth - giving them their "gospel shots." (And we're making it hard for them to "catch" the real thing!) People become numb to the truth when we splash our gaudy sayings in their eyes at every opportunity. Do you really think this is "opening them up to the Gospel"? Or is it really just another way for us to get smiles, waves, and approval from others in the "born-again club" out in the supermarket parking lot, who blow their horns with glee when they see your "Honk if you love Jesus!" bumper sticker? What about those "other sayings"? You know, the quasi-biblical ones, like "Please be patient, God isn't finished with me yet," which can really be a horrible replacement for "I'm sorry." (And besides, it puts the blame on the wrong person - "The reason I'm such a creep is because God isn't finished with me yet.") And if you really want to play "Stretch the Bible" there is that other fabulous excuse that absolutely ends all quests or expectations for holiness: "Christians aren't perfect... just forgiven!" Ah, how convenient. You might just as well say, "Christians aren't moral, just forgiven!" or what about "Christians aren't nice, just forgiven!" How about the ultimate? "Christians aren't saved . . . just forgiven!" (That might be a little too deep.) What we're saying by this glorious piece of prose is, "Madam, you cannot trust your teenage daughter with my Christian son, you'd better keep your eye on him . . . he's not safe . . . he's just forgiven!" Maybe I've gone a little too far to make a point, but I think the world is completely sick to its stomach with our sayings and "witnessing tools." It's time for us to be expressing the truth with our lives, and then the whole truth of God with our lips!"

If you would like to contact people who have been to any of the Bible Schools, including Rio Vida, go to http://www.capernwray.org.uk/alumni, and choose the Find a Friend option or read the news, and you could contact people who have been to the schools directly. I'm sure you will find folks willing to chat about their experiences Guy |

Katie, I went to Capernwray in 96/97 and it was one of the best years of my life. i learned so much about myself and my relationship with God. a year after i went to Capernwray I went to moody for 4 years and those too were amazing years. i met my husband and we are now living in chicago and he is a youth pastor. anyway, i would highly highly recommend going to cap and moody if you want to go to bible schools. i'm glad i went to Capernwray first though because it helped me grow in my own relationship with God apart from my family, friends and well everything familiar. i hope you end up going to Capernwray. if you end up at moody send me an email. mmberes@aol.com God bless you in your decisions. if you are constantly seeking HIs will for you He will bless your decisions.

Dear Laura: A few questions for you...(1) how did you hear about Capernwray Hall? (CH from now on), (2) What primarily attracts you to study at CH? I am originally from Scotland and now living with my wife and three children in Lynchburg, Virginia. Deb and I both attended CH in 1988-98 for the Winter School. Personally, attending CH was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and also one of significant spiritual growth in the Lord, probably unlike any other to date that I can recall. The enrichment of studying the Word of God with 195 students from around the world, serving one another, going on life-changing outreaches in schools and surrounding churches brings with it the opportunity to see lives changed as a result of your willingness and obedience. I am glad that you have opportunity to think about this. Feel free to respond or call (434) 845-7601 anytime. |

Hey Katie, I don't know if this response will help or not since you posted yours in August and it is now September . Anyway, I am going to New Zealand for a year. As far as I know, you can either go for 6 months, 1 year or a year and a half. They also have adventure Bible School three times a year. The NZ website is www.capernwray.org.nz Hope this helps, and hope to here from you soon,Jenna |

Hey Kristin, My name is Tricia Pérez and, although I never attended a semester at Portantorchas, I lived in CR for almost 4 years and sat in on classes after discovering the Bible school. (I actually attended Taurenhof '98.) I trust that it will be an amazing experience for you. I'm good friends with a few previous Portantorchas students and I know lives are constantly being changed there - as long as you are open to God working in you and through you during your time there. If you think I can answer any questions for you I'd be more than happy to try. (My in-laws are the directors of the school and my brother-in-law works at the school as well!) Because of Him, Tricia |

Laura, Capernwray is probably one of the most amazing experiences you will every get in life. I think it should be an essential part of being a Christian. You learn and grow so much. God really speaks to you in new ways and you make the most amazing friends...and I mean the most amazing. You get to share a room with people from all over the world and the fight for hot water in the morning is well.....just part of the experience. The food is good considering they are cooking for over 200 every meal time and yes you will put weight on. Its a thing called a 'custard baby'. Us girls all get them at Capernwray. We got a lot of custard and you piled the weight on but you leave and the weight soon drops off. One thing though...pray about your decision lots and lots. Don't jump ahead and make a decision...and don't go just because your friends are doing something similar. I met a few people there just because their mum and dad wanted them to go. I hope you do go and I will personally pray for you. Write to me at any point if you have any other questions and I will be happy to help you. Dan I have to reply to you. I was reading this forum and your email jumped out at me. I attended Capernwray in the dark ages, Winter School 76-77. You probably weren't even born yet. Anyway, my 18 year old son should read your email. He doesn't like outdoors, plays Settlers of Catan, and is taking Microcomputer Systems at college. And he isn't interested in Capernwray b/c he doesn't think that he'd fit in. Don't you find that people don't really understand the experience of it all unless they go? 27 years later, Capernwray is still among the best things that I have ever done. And I still keep in touch with a good friend from Capes, though she lives in L.A. and I'm in Canada. Its so great to read emails from so many that have gone to Capernwray after me, I just wish more from way back when would send updates to the Alumni section. Treasure your time at Capernwray, it sure is somewhere special. Joanne At 02:34:30 AM 19/07/03, Dan wrote: Well well... I just returned from attending the 02 winter and 03 spring terms at Capernwray Hall. The short version is: Best school year of my life. You will be blessed. They could charge twice as much and I'd still recommend it. Go. Long version: But yeah, richest school year of my life? You bet. Good people? Fantastic people, 'specially Rob and the staff girls. Solid teaching? Yes, it ranges from basic to pretty deep, but you get what you put into it. Accomodations? You're living in a MANOR for crying out loud! So you can't always get hot water -- you can't usually live in an English manor with a cobblestone courtyard and a tower with an 80 step spiral staircase going up into it either. Me, I've made a lot of friends... sure, a lot are the drift through your life and bless you type you never see again but think back on years after... a few are the great type you remain in touch with over the decades. The international atmosphere is fantastic... makes it a very very rich experience... the countryside is gorgeous, and this is from a guy who doesn't like to get out much... of course you get to travel Europe, a month if you go to winter and spring school! It's just... yeah, sounds like one of those cheesy testimonials, I know. But it IS life-changing. Go with an open heart, some spare change, and a willingness to try Marmite. You'll love it. The school, not the Marmite, I mean. Email me: desvonatmyrealbox.com (replace the at with @, ya know) if you want to ask any questions. Would love to feed more people to the Hall. Michael, if this was your idea, cheers! Was a good one. PS. If you go, take two things above all else: A digital camera and the board game 'Settlers of Catan'. Vets of my year will know of what I speak. PPS. Yeah, if anyone I know is reading this, I'm doin' well. Working in the tech industry. No plans for marriage with Chara - yet. Email me. ![]() [/quoted] |

Dear Laura, My name is Emily and I attended Capernwray Harbour in B.C. in 1998. My sister is currently attending Porteurs Du Flambuea in Quebec. I am from California. I would highly recommend Capernwray but I would also advise you to make sure when you go you go with an open heart and mind. Capernwray was one of the best decisions I could have made. Like you I went the fall after H.S. graduation. I wanted to take a year to focus on my relationship with God, have an adventure and learn who I was. I did all three. It was difficult at times because I had to break down everything I had ever been taught and hold it up to scripture and decide for myself if it was true and in line with God's word. This was hard but it made me claim my faith as my very own. If you would like contact with people who have gone to the other schools e-mail me. I have friends who went to England, Sweden and Australia. You will make friends for life and as someone else already said-you will grow if you want to. You have to put as much into it as you want to get out. Emily |

Hi there! I went to Capernwray Rio Vida in Spain in 2002. It was the best time of my life!!! It was so incredible. It was one adventure after another, and I made some lifelong friends there! It was an awesome time of fellowship, and drawing closer to God, and learning some incredible truths from the Bible! We got a chance to serve our community and other churches, interact with locals, go on a weekend road trip, and even got to go to Africa for one week after the school ended (to Morocco) as a cultural exposure trip, and that was a chance of a lifetime!!! I'll never forget that as long as I live. But yes, if you go to Capernwray, go with an open mind, and with a humble heart. Be prepared to learn a lot, and to be stretched, and to have God really touch your heart and be changed forever!! Go for it!! Simone ![]() |
