I am from Ontario, Canada and i am very interested in attending Capernwray in Australia, in January 2007. From what i have heard and read I am really looking forward to my trip because it is going to be an awesome experience, where we can experience what God is doing in other countries.

No, you're not too old at all. Capernwray is an excellent place to learn. There could be people there old enough to be your parents.

Hey to everyone planning to attend Capernwray fall 06. I have been reading everyone's comments for about an hour and a half, and i can't stop reading! I'm so pumped about growing in my spiritual walk with the lord next year and making lasting relationships. I thought I would throw my name out there so i could make some friends before i go, to make the transition a little easier. My e-mail is Johannesburg13@maplenet.net

Holdin it down in E-town Indiana, JPL

P.S. Posting a comment on a forum is extremely uncharacteristic of me, but im so excited for next year i COULD NOT keep my excitement to myself.

I just don't care for the cessationalist teachings of people like John MacArthur or Hank Hanegraaf. Also, some of my former classmates have responded in a harsh, unChristlike way to some of my friendly, well-meaning e-mails since my going to that school.

I found that there was a wide variety of teachings on the giftings of the holy spirit- by no means all cessationalist (I'm thinking of Derek Burnside and his lectures of the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit.) What I liked was that Most of the time there was not just one view shared. Rob Whitaker especially was very good about sharing up to 5 different views about different controversial topics. People would walk away unhurt, and often with different interpretations of the text. I thought it handled very well.

I'm sorry to hear about the harsh "unchristlike" e-mails.

Spiro, thank you so much for your entry. I cannot emphasise enough how important that is to me. I'm so glad that Capernwray is opening up to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Now what I think needs to be emphasized is the fruits of the Holy Spirit, as shown in Galatians 5:22-23.

Here's some of my thoughts concerning C-wray: I'm a senior in high school, so I'm graduating in May 2006. I've already applied to a number of colleges and am not really looking at anymore, so all that stuff is finished. I wasn't even considering something like Torchbearers until very recently, though I had heard a friend talk about his thoughts on going back in September. I want to glorify God in all that I do, and I am pondering whether I want to do something like Torchbearers for a year. I just don't know if it's what I really want, and a desire that God has placed within me. I believe that if I am actively pursuing God, He'll prove to me my desires. But for now, I'm still praying. My question is: what hesitiations, or callings, or whatever, were on the minds of those of you who have gone, or on the minds of others considering this? Did you wait for an answered prayer? Did you just follow your heart? Were you thinking about college before Torchbearers or what happened?

For me, Capernwray was the answer to my prayers, although I did not fully realize it at the time. My experience at Capernwray truly changed my life.
I had wanted to attend Capernwray right after high school, but for some reason, my heart was not at peace, and I felt it was not the right timing at that point. After two years at a Christian university, and having been through some very difficult times, I knew that I needed to take a year off school and spend time getting to know God better and refocusing my life.
I knew that Capernwray would be a wonderful and unique time where I could devote six entire months of my life to the study of God's Word and seeking His will, and I knew of no better or more necessary use of my time at that point.
At first, I did not get in: I was on the waitlist. I was so convinced that this was what I needed, that God knew I needed a reality check, and once again, I turned all my "plans" over to Him, who knew what He had for me, be it Capernwray or not. It was not three days later, that I got in.
I learned so many things about God, myself and others, while there, and I gained an entirely new perspective on the world. Being able to meet believers from all over the world, from many different cultures, was such a blessing, and unbeknownst to me at that time, God also used my time there to prepare me for the task that He would call me to now, 2 years later: the RA for international students at my university.
Each persons journey is unique. Walking by faith and trusting God to open and close doors were key in my journey to Capernwray as well as Him using some very difficult circumstances in my life to prompt the application process, but this is just my own experience.
My time at Capernwray was the best and one of the most challenging times in my life, and I would highly recommend it, if it is the place where God leads you.

His peace to you, Christi

Hey everybody! I am a senior in highschool this year and I'm not quite sure what I want to do with my life. A few days ago a friend mentioned Capernwray so I thought I would check it out. I love to travel, I have a desire to learn more about God, why not? I have a few questions. What denomination is it? What is the "campus" life like? Extremely strict like no dancing or going to movies? I don't know what I'd do without my christian rock music! Some feedback would be so wonderful! Thanks!!!

Hello, Suzy.

Capernwray is non-denominational. When I was there, it was not against dancing or going to the movies, as we did get to do a folk dance at least once in the lecture hall and did get to go to a movie (if it was in good taste, of course). And like you, I also like Christian rock music. When I attended Capernwray, I was 23 and then turned 24 and now I'm 40 and I liked Christian rock then and I like it now. I don't think they promote the use of heavy rock during outreach, but if you like to listen to it on your Walkman or Discman, that's your choice.

When I attended Dallas Baptist University in Texas shortly after Capernway, I took a course that was actually folk and square dancing, but in Baptist schools in Texas, you could not use the word "dance", so guess what they called the class instead? Rhythmic Activities.

Don,
Thanks for replying so quickly and for answering my questions! I have no trouble following rules but I don't want to be in a place that is ultra conservative!

Suzy, please explain to me what you think is ultra conservative. What I think of as ultra conservative is, for example, thinking all other Bible versions except King James are wrong, only one particular denomination is going to heaven or forbidding others to listen to Christian rock, no matter what the words say. That is not what I am and I do not believe that is what Capernwray is at all. I also think legalism is requiring that which God does not require and/or forbidding that which God does not forbid.

HEY GIRL!!! I am so excited to hear that you are interested in coming to Portantorchas!! It seriously has changed my life. I grew up in a Christian home and have already had a couple years of college, but I never really had to make a decision for my own. I came down here and learned so much and really grew stronger in my faith. I also was blessed with the opportunity to build relationships with peole from all over the world! A typical day during bible school is class from 915am to 1220am. Devotionals are at 845 or 9am daily. Wednesday in the morning we serve each other by doing chores around the school, inside and out. The weekends are free to do whatever but Freddy, a staff member, with usually have a few trips planned. He has is set up so that if you go to each trip and are attending the school for both semesters, you will have an opportunity to see some of the prettiest places in Costa Rica. Girl, this place is awesome!!! Email me if you have any more questions, concerns or comments! God bless. ~Amber

Suzy-
I have trouble following rules but i didn't think Cape was all that strict. And i learned a lot of God placed authority and respecting it. but i'm also one of those people that view rules as guidelines so maybe that's how i got through it! Just kidding but no they're more realistic than legalistic especially the principal Rob Whittacker. the rules are practical and there for a reason and they do allow dancing.

Oh ok. That's interesting. Thanks. What's that like being around so many foreign people, I don't mean that in a rude way, let me say it different, like so many people from a different culture? Is it very different or was it kind of normal?...

I grew immensely as a result of my time at Capernwray Hall. The growth was a result of many things: God's work in my life through the lectures, through practical ministry experience, and also, immense growth came through the people who were my roommates, friends and most importantly my brothers and sisters in Christ from all over the world. To be surrounded by people from every inhabited continent in the world was one of the greatest blessings in my life. I gained so much perspective and my view of Christianity and the world was totally changed! The people and the depth of unique perspective each individual brings from their country, culture and experience enriches the Capernwray experience. To me, the people and fellowship received in such an international setting, was one of the best parts of my Capernwray experience, along with, of course the spiritual blessings of growth and better understanding of God and His Word.
Certainly, as in any international setting, cultural sensitivity is important. People from other cultures will not always understand where you are coming from and will have other ways of thinking about and doing things, but wonderful friendships and depth of understanding and perspective can result, enriching and blessing your life. That is what I found through my experience.

i've been to 3 schools under this bible school org (1995, 199.. i have also been involved in the university of the nations, which is under youth with a mission.
i feel a little weird posting this, since i'm going to recommend you look into a different organization!!

if you want to go to england.. the harpenden base is one place i've always wanted to go, more specifically for what they offer beyond their first level school. uofn requires you to do this first level school first before you continue on in any of their other schools... there are MANY MANY amazing 2nd level schools that you may end up finding and wanting to do as well... and the good thing about this uni is that each course is condensed to a shorter period with one main focus. the first level school is called discipleship training school (they are run all over the world, though i would also recommend you be very careful in choosing where you go.) it's 6 months - 3 months of lecture phase and 2-3 months of practical outreach, applying what you learned in the lecture phase.
though i wouldn't recommend going to kona, hawaii for a dts. side note. they are WAY to big. trust me. i was there last year and saw it.
i did my dts a couple of years ago in australia - another GREAT place!!

doing schools under both of these organizations, i found the latter to be much more applicable to living. the capernwray schools are wonderful - though i didn't find any room for leadership development as a woman. often we were separated from the guys if a woman was teaching. and in comparison, i would say the capernwray schools are bible-knowledge-based compared to the practical element that a DTS brings.
i'm not sure where you stand with this issue (women in leadership), but for me looking back, i would have liked to have known this.

my fiance has been to the harpenden base and knows a lot of people there (he's a leader currently with UofN). i can guarantee you will have an amazing time! if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask away - and if you are interested in adding this to your list of places you'd look into.. i can give you a contact there...
their website is http://www.ywamharpenden.org/

honestly check it out..
and feel free to get in touch if you have more questions

p.s. though i know that if God is directing you to the bible school under capernwray, He will definately speak to you!! going to His Hill in texas, was a definate change in the road for me.
