Over the past twelve months Capernway has been navigating the implications of both Mark Thomas and Rob Whittaker retiring in Spring 2017. We have valued the prayers and support of many as we have trusted in the Lord’s faithfulness as we seek a new Managing Director and Bible School Principal. We are pleased to announce that the two positions have now been filled by Jonathan Halsey and Derek Burnside respectively. We rejoice in all that the Lord will be pleased to do and develop here under their leadership as they trust and depend upon our risen Lord Jesus Christ.
Jonathan Halsey currently lives in Austria, where he serves as the Principal of Tauernhof Bible School, Schladming. He has been at Tauernhof for over 5 years, and previously attended Tauernhof and Klostermühle Bible Schools as a student.
Immediately prior to joining Tauernhof, Jonathan worked as an in-house Commercial Lawyer for Red Bull in Salzburg, Austria, having trained and remained upon qualification as a Solicitor at Osborne Clarke, London. Jonathan completed his BA Modern Languages (French and German) at Bristol University, where he was President of the Christian Union at his Hall of Residence, before obtaining the Post Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, London.
Alongside his duties at Tauernhof, he has advised Torchbearers International and an international Christian Legal Ministry on projects and legal matters. Jonathan also lectures and preaches regularly at Tauernhof and in nearby churches and was recently a guest speaker at a conference for Christian students in law, economics and politics in Vienna.
Jonathan enjoys the outdoors and has run 2 marathons and is an Austrian qualified ski instructor and trekking guide. He is married to Claire who studied Fine Art at Lancaster University before working as a Product Development Executive for Hasbro. They have 3 young children: Joah (6), Leah (4) and Hannah (1).
Derek Burnside currently lives in Exeter, England where for the last 21 years he’s served on the staff and leadership teams of Belmont Chapel, a large independent city-centre church.
Prior to that he was a regional staff worker in the South-West of England with the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship, and before that he taught Religious Education in a local secondary school. In addition to his duties at Belmont he’s a trustee of Keswick Ministries, a ‘Minister at Large’ with the Partnership UK church network and teaches ‘A’ Level RE part-time at Exeter School.
He has a BA in English and Philosophy from Liverpool University, and a PGCE in Religious Studies and MA in Theology, both from Exeter University.
Since 2001 he’s been a regular guest lecturer at European Torchbearer Centres including Capernwray, Tauernhof, Bodenseehof and Holsby Brunn. He’s married to Penny, who currently works as an Education Officer for the Diocese of Exeter; prior to that she was the head teacher of a Devon Primary School for eleven years. They have no children, but do have a cat called Max.
Please pray for these families as they prepare for this significant change in their lives and become part of the team at Capernwray.
